Under-17 Division I Cricket

S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, Sri Sumangala College, Panadura, St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa, Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala and Dharmaraja College, Kandy enter the second round of the Inter School Under-17 Division I cricket tournament as the only unbeaten teams when the crucial phase of the tournament gets underway shortly.
The undisputed champions of their respective groups in the first round, they will be the favourites in their respective groups consisting of four teams, during the second round of the tournament which will see the first match being worked off before the end of this week.
While the Thomians, Dharmaraja and Sri Sumangala won seven out of seven matches in their respective groups consisting of eight teams, St. Joseph Vaz and Maliyadeva won all six matches in their groups (of seven teams).
Prince of Wales (won six out of seven), Wesley (won six out of seven), St. Benedict’s (won five out of six), Mahinda (four out of six) and St. Servatius’ (five out of six) were the champions in other groups entering the second round with strong chances of entering the knockout phase of the tourney.
Defending champions St. Sebastian’s, Moratuwa were the third placed team in Group ‘E’ dominated by St. Benedict’s. They will compete in Group ‘T’ in the second round alongside strong favourites S. Thomas’, St. Joseph’s and St. Peter’s, Negombo. The Thomians have emerged as a strong favourite during the first round. Their bowling spearhead Kalana Perera was one of the standout players during the first round taking all ten wickets in a match.
Last year finalists Thurstan were the runners up to the Cambians in group ‘B’ and they will feature in group ‘T’ led by St. Benedict’s.
According to the Under-17 tournament secretary of the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association Wasantha Haputhanthri, best two teams in each group during the second round will advance to the pre-quarter finals.
"The teams in the second round will play three matches to decide the champion and the runners-up of the eight groups. They will then play the knockout matches," said Haputhanthri.
The final dates to complete the first, second and third match of this phase are June 30, July 4 and july 8th respectively.

Group ‘S’: Wesley, Mahanama, Colombo, St. Sylvester’s, Mahanama, Panadura.
Group ‘T’: St. Benedict’s, Richmond, Kalutara Vidyalaya, Thurstan.
Group ‘U’: St. Joseph Vaz, Wennappuwa, Debarawewa National School, Dharmasoka, Royal Colombo.
Group ‘V’: Maliyadeva, St. Anthony’s, Katugastota, Tissa Central, Kalutara, St. Servatius’, Matara.
Group ‘W’: Dharmaraja, Trinity, St. Peter’s, Bambalapitiya, Mahinda.
