The former Chief of the court of Appeal, Old Rajan Vijith Malalgoda, is promoted Judge of the Supreme Court. Prior to that he was attached to the Attorney General's Department as Solicitor General. He had served in the AG's Department for 31 years before he was appointed as Judge of Appeal Court.
In his reply speech at his Felicitation ceremony, he has paid a tribute to his old school with the following words:
"I am indebted to my alma mater, Dharmaraja College, Kandy for the values it indelibly inculcated in me."
He has also quoted from the Dhammapada which serves as guiding principle in dispensing Justice.
In fact an eminent lawyer who is an Old Mahindian remarked that he had noticed the underlying Buddhist thinking transparent in Justice Malalgoda's judgments. He was not surprised when he was told that Vijith was in fact Old Boy of Dharmaraja. So this appears to be the hall mark of a Rajan wherever he goes.
The only other Old Rajan who graced the Supreme Court Bench prior to Vjith was Justice H. Rodrigo who is a Patron of Colombo Branch.
Incidentally, Vijith was also a Committee Member of the Colombo Branch quite some time ago.
