DR. HARISCHANDRA WIJETUNGE COLECTS AN AWARD.

Dr. Harischandra Wijetunge former teacher at Dharmaraja has been
honoured with a special life time award, along with two others at the
Godage Literary Awards 2016 held recently at Sri Lanka Foundation
Institute Auditorium.

Dr. Harischandra Wijetunga was the chemistry teacher at Dharmaraja in
the mid '50s. He lived in the Hostel. He was a handsome man, dressed
in an immaculate white national dress. That was the time that Sinhala
language was made the medium of instruction. Detractors said there
were no text books to teach science in Sinhala. Dr. Wijetunga wrote a
book on Chemistry in Sinhala sitting through a single night , to be
sent to the printer.

After retirement he became a lawyer and appeared free of charge police
and the army officers. Some time later he founded a political party,
contested the presidential election several times.

He produced a massive English-Sinhala Dictionary and presented a copy
to Dharmaraja.
