Rajans start on a bright note

Dharmaraja College started the inter school cricket season on a bright note.where in the opening game at their home den at Lake View they beat Matale' s. St. Thomas' College by an innings thanks to their Vice Captain Kavinda Ratnayake a stylish stroke maker who went on to score 205 runs.

This year, though they have a fresh laden side, most of them are doing well.

Dharmaraja College who started cricket in the 1890's has a tremendous record in the field of cricket and are sure to mintin their reputation for another season.

This is one school, which is well supported by their 0ld Boys Union and Cricket Foundation, These two bodies provide almost all the facilities what cricket needs, and even their Old Boys branches overseas give a big hand.

Dahrmaraja College is one of the premier Buddhist schools in the country with a history of more than125 years founded by Sir Henry Steel Olcot in 1887 as Kandy Buddhist High School and later became Dharmaraja College and they started the game of cricket in1890's.

They are one of the oldest cricket playing schools in the country. Rajans are lucky to have the service of Senaka Dissanayake once again as their coach. He is a top cricketer to come out of this school and was the first double centurion.

As a coach, he is giving his best, and he knows how to get the best out of the players.

He played for Kandy CC, Bloomfield CAC, BRC and also in Australia. In his coaching field he has produced some top class cricketers and invincible teams.

They played their second game against Dharmasoka College, followed with matches against Dharmapala College, Vidyartha College, St. Sylvester's College, Sri Rahula College (Matara), Zahira College, Their next game is on November 3rd and 4th Lumbini College (Away), 7th and 8th Anuradhapura Central (Lake View), 14th and 15th Royal College (Reid Avenue). 2015 January 9/`10 St. Anthony's College (Lake View),30/31 Nalanda College (Lake View), February 6/7 Ananda College (Colombo), 9/10 Maliyadewa College (Kurunagala), 20/21 Rewatha College (Balapitiya), 27/28 D.S. Senanyake College (Lake View), March 20/21 Kingswsood (Host), 29 - 0ne day vs Kingswood (Host).

At one time Rajans were famous for producing speed bowlers. Some of them who come to mind are T.B. Kehelgamuwa who was known as Kandyan Express' and was a well known cricketer. Sonny Yatawara the man who bowled Sir Garfield Sobers for a duck and Ananda B.W. Jayasundara.

These are products of the 1960s. Later there were bowlers such as G.S. Ratnayake, G.B.Yatigamana, Mahinda Pethiyagoda and Shanthi Kumar.

They Also had top cricketers like Arthur"Kopi" Alwis the first centurion of the school, T.B.Talwatte became the second centurion, D.D.P. Alwis, Shanthi Mendis, S.G Munasinghe, D.D. Hemapala, David Karunarthne, D.D.Somasiri, T.B.Marasinghe, R.S.Navarthne, A.V.A. Pathirathne, Ajith Ganoruwa, Gamini Gunatilake Snr., Upannda Jayasundara, A.S.Ekanyake, Pujitha Jayasundara, AjithNaranpanawa, Senaka Dissanayake, Priyantha Weeragpda, Chandra de Silva, Senarth Alwis, Janaka Tennkoon, Thilina Tennakoon, D.D.C. Alwis,  Gamini Thomas, Jeewan Gajaweera, Indragith Bandaranayakle, Bandulla Gunarthne, Ravi Rajapakse, Vipul Ranasinghe, Chamara Kapugedera, Sadun Werakkody.

Dharmaraja - this time are all out to give of their best this season. They are led by all rounder Tharusha Weragoda and Kavind Ratnayake will be the vice captain. So this year half the team is going to be freshers.

Tharusha Weragoda is a fourth year player, bats right and bowls right arm off spinners. Kavinda Rathnayake the stumper of the side. He is also a fourth year player and the cricketer to be watched. He started the season with a double century.

The others are Wenuka Galahitiyawa a left hand batsmen and a good bowler who took 83 wicket in the last season.

Kawishka Dissanayake who bats number one is a left hander, Dehan Guansinhe a good medium paceman and also a hard-hitting left hand bat,Ruchire Pupulwetta a left arm leg spinner, Gihan Senaviratne bowls right hand medium, Niwantha Hearth a left hand medium pace men, Nipuna Hearth a steady right hand batsmen, and a left arm pace man, Gihan Witharana a god right arm off spinner, Asmitha Rajapaksha left arm leg spinner, Upulitha Rajapakse bats right hand, Chathura Wijartne, Dimthu Liyanarachchi, 15 years old Bawantha Udangamuwa, Achintha Rupanayake, Danushka Bandara, Kavinda Thilakaarthne, Deera Adikari, Chanuka Ranathunge and Manjula Udagedera a keen follower of the game is the MIC.
