Faced with a modest target of 144, the Rajans stuttered and ground their way to the total to beat Kingswood by four wickets with 38 balls to spare at Asgiriya yesterday.
Jayapadma Tennekoon capped a good display with the ball by scoring 22, Chandimal de Silva 35 not out was a laboured effort. It was left to bowler – turned-batsman Venuka Galahitiyawa to put the Rajans on the victory path with a brisk 31. He hit the only six of the match in a refreshing display.
Kingswood, who lost early wickets, were rescued by a partnership of 57 between top scorer Tharindu Liyanage and skipper Supun Bandara. The skipper played several attacking shots to wrest the initiative. Liyanage’s was a dedicated innings which had a judicious mixture of attack and defence. He picked up a couple of wickets, too.
