Last year’s champions were made to play second fiddle as the ‘B’ Division champions of 2013 upstaged them by 30 points to 15 at Bogambara. The Mt. Lavinia Thomians gained their points through two goals, two penalties and two converted penalty tries as against a goal, a try and a penalty by the Rajans.
The Thomians were outstanding in forwards play. The big forwards also showed considerable mobility. They got a fair bit of turnover-ball too. Kasun Jayasuriya on the wing, fly half Walpola and centre Senanayake stood out.
Wingers Kasun Jayasuriya and Henakankanamage scored first half tries. Scrum half Wimalasuriya touched down for the Rajans to make it 10-5 at the break.
A Weerasekera penalty and a Kumara try were the scoring efforts in the second half. The Thomians received ‘a golden handshake’ in the form of the two penalty tries.
The margin of victory maybe slightly flattening, but there is no gainsaying the fact that they were the better team.
The Rajans back division, slightly built and less imposing than their counterparts were extremely nippy when they ran with the ball. The passes were short and snappy and the back division proved elusive. When they do settle down after a couple of games, they could be a dangerous side.
The forwards need to improve and meet their opponents upfront. Some of the players need to think more on their feet.
