Dr.W. G. Weeraratne, the Editor in Chief of the Encyclopedia of Buddhism has passed away. His funereal will be held at the Mt. Lavinia Cemetry at 5 p.m. on 13th February. He taught Pali at Dharmaraja during the years 1957-58, immediately after leaving University of Ceylon, Peradeniya. Gamini Gunawardane Rtd, Snr. DIG and late Jinesi Aponsu entered the Peradeniya University under his tutelage in 1958. Dr. Weeraratne was a brilliant Old Boy of Mahinda College Galle who entered the University in 1953, having won the Professor M.B.Ariyapala Gold Medal for the best student in Oriental Studies. After leaving Dharmaraja he later obtained his Ph. D. from the University of Lancaster UK. He served in the editorial staff of the Buddhist Encyclopedia for 51 years and was instrumental in the completion of the Encyclopedia which runs into 8 volumes.
