The Rajans did the expected by defeating rivals Kingswood by 33 points (3 goals, 4 penalties) to 24 (2 goals, 2 tries), in an entertaining game of rugby at Bogambara, on Friday. At the break, the winners led 21-12.
Tilina Wijesinghe, Dharmaraja’s playmaker, set in motion the onslaught by sprinting and dummying his way over 60 yards to score under the posts and obtain full points by converting.
Centre Udangamuwa broke free from his twenty-five and charged ahead. The ball changed hands thrice, before flanker Janaka Wijesinghe went over.
The Rajans had set the early pace and they seemed content. Kingswood came back fighting and scored through winger Jaleel. Shortly after, they added a second try. K. N. Perera was on target and added the extra points.
Janaka Wijesinghe then broke through from midfield, kicked ahead and was just able to get his hand on the ball. Wijesinghe converted this too. Tilina Wijesinghe, who was spot on most times with his kicks, added four penalties to the Dharmaraja tally.
Lock Jayashanka and Chaturanga went over for Kingswood in this half.
Kingswood were brave in defeat. Their back division showed a lot of thrust and penetration and cut through the defence often. However, they lacked finish.
The Rajans used the pace and power of the back division early on. But then they had a time of it stalling the potentially dangerous Randles Hill lads.
This game was played for the William Weerasinghe Memorial Trophy. Mrs. Kamala Weerasinghe handed over the trophy to the victorious skipper, Rochana Hettiarachchi.
