A Distinghushed Old Rajan Passes Away

Dharmaraja College OBU Colmobo Branch regrets to announce the passing away a distinguished Old Boy, Chairman of the Peoples' Bank and Peoples' Leasing and Finance (PLC) Mr. W. Karunajeeva. He passed away yesterday morning (29th) at his residence in Andeson Flats. He was 66 years old. He assumed duty as Chirman of Peoples' bank in 2007. He had his primary education at Bowala Maha Vidyalaya and secondary education at Dharmaraja Colege from where he entered the Peradeniya University, where he obtined a degree in commerce. He began his carrer as a teacher. In 1987 he took oaths as an Attorney-at Law. In 1977, he was appoined a Working Director of the Ceylon fisheries Corporation where he later became the Chairman. In 2005, he was appointed Chairman of the Employees' Trust Fund( RTF) and then as Chiarman Peoples' Bank in 2007.

The exemplary and visionary leadership of Mr. Karunajeewa has contributed to the expansion and current position of the Peoples' Bank. His outstanding contribution towads the developing of the Peoples' Bank, its subsidiaries and local Banking fraternity was recognized by the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka which awarded him an Honorary Fellowship of the Institute in 2010.

Mr. Karunajeewa's pasing away caused an irreparable loss both to the OBU movement of Dharmaraja as well as to the College. He was a loyal Old Boy. It was only last week that People's Bank under his leadership undertook to sponsor the 'Risgo' Centinary Celebration Jamboree and the sponsorship cheque was handed over by him to the Old Scouts' Association. Once he was so thrilled by the College Kandyan Dancing Troupe which performed before him when he was invited as the Chief Gueast for College Prize Giving, he on his own intiatative offered to sponsor a performance by the Dharmaraja Asthetics Department, at the BMICH. He was also an unfailing supporter of the Colombo Branch OBU by regularly providing an Advertsing Banner of the Peoples' Bank for the Colombo Rajans' Annual Dinner.

Mr. Karunajeeva leaves behind his wife, Kusuma, son, Indika and daughter Dilini. Cortage leaves his residence at no U/2/1 anderson Flats,Colombo 5 on 31st Jan. at 3 p.m. for cremation at at the Borella Cemetery.
