An Old Rajan, one of the 7 Jayasundara Brothers of Lewella passed away after a brief illness. While at School, he was a Stubbs’ Shield boxer in the years 1960-1963 & also represented Sri Lanka Schools in boxing. He represented College in Cricket, Soccer & Hockey. After leaving Dharmaraja, he joined the Police Department as a Sub-Inspector where he took to boxing, cricket & rugby. Daya captained the Police Rugby Team in the year in 1974. He donned he national jersey against All-England in 1971. He was a member of the National Rugby side in the following year for the Asian Championships and toured Hon Kong in 1972. Daya W. was the regular choice as flanker in the Sri Lanka side during the period 1971- ’77.
Daya was also in the Sri Lanka Team in 1972, captained by another rugby legend, Y C. Chang. Jayasundara was also the Manager of the National Rugby side during the years 1992-1994 at the world Cup Trials in Italy and in two Rugby Asiads.
From 1985 – 1992 he was the coach of the Police XV. During this period, police carried away the League Championship Trophy and the coveted John Player Trophy for 5 years consecutively and also the Clifford Cup. In the Police team he coached was another Rajan, Hemantha Yatawara, also of the Police. Of the 22 players who constituted the National Rugby Pool for the Asiad in 1990, 12 were from the Police team that he was coaching. That included Hemantha Yatawara.
For his distinguished service in the Police he was awarded the following Medals:
Janaraja Padakkama, Dheergha Seva Padkkama, Sri Lanka Police Vishistha Seva Padakkama, Poorna Bhoomi Padakkama and the Swarna Jayanthi Padakkama.
In1993, Daya’s son Rajitha became the Rugby Captain of Royal College Colombo that won the Bradby shield that year.
With Daya’s demise Dharmaraja has lost a very distinguished Sportsman Old Boy. May he attain Nibbana.
