Dharmasena Wijesinghe (1954-1956) Former Patron of OBU Colombo Branch, passed away after a brief illness on 3.09. 2018. His cremation will be held at Kanatte at p.m. on Thursday 6th September.
He was 82 years old. D. Wijesinghe as he was later known, was a son of a farmer from Anuradhapura District. Dharmasena moved over to Dharmaraja College in 1954 to join the University Entrance class, during the time of Principal, S.A. Wjethilaka. Soon he became known for his oratory and he became the Leader of the College English and Sinhala Debating Teams. On entering the University Peradeniya, he became the President of the Jayatilaka Hall
Students Union where he excelled in that capacity.
On leaving the University he was admitted to the Ceylon Administrative Service. He excelled here involving himself in the Food Production Drive launched by Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake and the Agriculture Minister, M.D. Banda in 1965-1979. In later years he became Secretary to Mr. S.Thondaman, the then Minister of Cottage Industries.
By this time he had made a name for himself as an upright Public Servant. He moved out of that position disagreeing with the Minister on a matter of principle. Later he became Secretary to the Minister of Plantations. On retirement, he was appointed Secretary to the Cabinet which post he held in the Governments of Chandrika Kumaratunga and of Mahinda Rajapaksa. On his leaving this position past the age of 70 years, he was posted as High Commissioner at the Sri Lanka High Commission in South Africa. Both his son and son-in-law were Rajans.
Mr, Wijesinghe has mentioned in his biography that on his entry to Dharmaraja he was opened to new vistas.
